Into the Darkest Corner, written by Elizabeth Haynes, introduces to the young and beautiful Catherine Bailey, full of hopes and dreams of having a wonderful life. One day, she makes the acquaintance of Lee Brightman, and it seems she gets closer to living her dream life; he is the perfect man, albeit a bit mysterious. However, after some time, their relationship dissolves into chaos, with Lee displaying a very dark, brutal and violent side he kept hidden all this time.
After failing to gain support from her friends to break it up, she makes a plan to escape her predicament. Skip forward to four years later, and Catherine lives a new life in a new city while Lee is rotting behind bars.
Understandably still traumatized, Catherine is trying to piece her life back together, at which point a new attractive neighbor moves in next to her, encouraging her to face her fear. It seems as if all will be fine from now, until the moment Catherine gets the one phone call she has been fearing all of these years...
Apart from that, as you could probably tell, the author also touches on themes of love, physical and spiritual connection, not to mention that the story itself and the characters in it are pretty solid and entertaining, making this a novel worth a read for those looking for a darker and less stereotypical take on the subject of romance.
Even though it may seem like Into the Darkest Corner is one of those typical romance novels that litters most bookshelves nowadays, it only starts off as such and takes a somewhat different path.
Instead of having two people who work through their differences in order to stay together, this ends up becoming more a story of revenge than anything else, with the best part being that the more you read it, the more you get the impression that, in the end, Catherine may deserve what Lee has in store for her. Not to say that she does, but this is one mystery that kept my brain working until the end of the book.
In addition to providing a different take on romance novels, I found it interesting that Elizabeth Hayes chose to explore a very specific topic; how rash and thoughtless decisions made during our youth can end up haunting us later in life, how they will keep us prisoner regardless of how much we think we are free.
