As Earth's armed forces have stopped the alien advance, they are also preparing to launch into play advanced new ships and weapons that would, for the first time ever, put them on equal footing with the invaders. Of course, the course of war waits for no man, and these formidable foes also have a few tricks left up their sleeve.

Marko Kloos has dazzled us time and time again with his Frontlines series, and to the great joy and relief of his fans all over the world the latest chapter in that saga was published recently: Fields of Fire . In this one, we follow Andrew and Halley once again as they find themselves at the forefront of the desperate human attempt to recapture Mars from the Lankies, more than a year after its conquest.

The Frontlines series has certainly giving us more than a few epic moments and encounters between the humans and their alien invaders, and Marko Kloos returns in force once again to expand on his universe and continue the story of humanity's struggle to maintain its own existence.

With the previous two books in the Frontlines series by Marko Kloos we've become somewhat acquainted with Andrew Grayson and the universe this grand space opera takes place in. Basically-speaking, the whole thing begins with an alien invasion, beings of a rather mysterious and undescribed nature possessing immense power.

Lines of Departure by Marko Kloos is a direct sequel to Terms of Enlistment , though the former can certainly be enjoyed with no knowledge of the latter. Nevertheless, I do recommend reading the books in order. In any case, this time around we follow once again Andrew Grayson as he finds himself assigned to a ship bound to some distant colony, one where humanity's worst nightmare won't ever find them.

The year is 2108, and most of humanity living on Earth doesn’t have it easy; overpopulation led people down to a spiral of crime and poverty, with countless living in slums where the daily ration consists of two hundred calories of soy. Andrew Grayson is sick and tired of living his life, and so he decides to take one of the two options available to him: join the military (the other, winning a lottery-ticket off-world was never going to happen anyways).
