“The Guilty” by David Baldacci – Old Choices; New Consequences

Image
In his many past outings David Baldacci's Will Robie has proven himself to be a one-of-a-kind assassin, ruthless, effective and infallible. One after the other his targets were biting the dust, and he made short work of all his foes even when things were at their most complicated. However, in The Guilty Baldacci reminds us of how human he is, as Robie does the unthinkable: he fails a critical assignment, finding himself simply unable to pull the trigger. With his incompetence overshadowing the grandiose reputation he has built for himself, Robie is sent down on a path into his own past.

Though Will Robie and Jessica Reel are assassins, they keep on existing far past what their line of work entails for two reasons: they work for the “good guys” (that is to say, the government) and are the best at what they do. In The Target David Baldacci brings to us yet another story featuring the two protagonists; this time around, they are paired up by request of the President, sending them on a very dangerous mission with incalculable potential repercussions to put an end to a global threat. They already have their work cut out for them, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

David Baldacci has made a name for himself over the years for the action-packed thrillers he kept on delivering, and while recently some may have qualified his writing as having declined in quality, he recently came back in full force with The Hit . Once again, we follow Will Robie, a highly-trained assassin working for the government, as he is sent to take out Jessica Reed, another assassin who has recently gone rogue and proceeded to eliminate her former colleagues.

Many people carry on with their daily lives in the great United States of America without even realizing the kinds of games which are played at the top. As it turns out, America happens to have a lot of enemies targeting it, and sometimes official channels, such as the police, the FBI, the CIA, and even the military aren’t capable of getting the job done.
