“Fever” by Maya Banks – Jealousy and Obsession

Fever by Maya Banks is the second part of The Breathless series, and if you can remember, the first book introduced us to three of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the country, Jace, Ash and Gabe. However, the first story was only concentrated on the last of these three characters. This time around, the story revolves around Jace and Ash.

They have been best friends for years upon years, sharing practically everything with each other, even their women. However, one day they make the acquaintance of a young and infatuating woman by the name of Bethany, and Jace is overcome by powerful emotions, those of obsession and jealousy. Determined to keep Bethany for himself only, Jace is willing to do anything it takes, even if it means turning his back on his really one and only best friend.

First, I will say that I was quite happy to learn that this book took a bit of a different direction from the first one, all while remaining in the same universe. I was expecting to have to go through three books during which a single relationship develops, and this change of pace has proven itself more than welcome. In addition, it explores a subject many of us have probably encountered in real life at one point or another; to choose between a friend and a lover.

Before reading this book though you should know that you’ll be required to suspend your sense of disbelief; after all, how likely is it that two of the richest, most powerful, and thus most intelligent men in the country get into a petty conflict over a woman, especially considering they have been friends forever?

While it is true that love can make one crazy, the book would have benefited from a deeper exploration of the logic, or at least the reasoning followed by the characters, as in some cases their actions do become questionable.

All in all, the story did manage to keep me interested, and apart from seeing how the woman would impact the friendship between the two men, I have to say I was very curious to see how and where it would all end.

Naturally, I won’t be spoiling anything, but if you are looking for a simple way of entertaining yourself for an evening, this book should do it, provided of course you like these types of stories.
