“Daddy’s Gone A Hunting” by Mary Higgins Clark – Destroying the Past
Daddy’s Gone A Hunting is yet another captivating mystery brought to us by Mary Higgins Clark, revolving around two sisters, Hannah and Kate Connelly.
They both come from a rich family which owns plenty of old furnishings and antiques, all stored in a museum. One night, however, the museum inexplicably goes up in flames and pretty much explodes, destroying not only itself but also damaging many of the surrounding buildings.
Once the dust settles, it is discovered that a retired craftsman by the name of Gus and Kate Connelly were at the museum, with the former being dead and the latter lying in a coma.
As Hannah investigates the accident, it becomes increasingly apparent that not everything is what it seems, or more precisely, nothing is what it seems. Why were Kate and Gus meeting at the museum that night? Why are there signs of foul play?
With neither of them being able to tell Hannah what’s going on in, Hannah must keep on pushing on her own to find out just what in God’s name is going on… and it could very well get her killed.
As far as mysteries go, while this certainly isn’t anything groundbreaking or legendary, it is certainly up there, in terms of quality at least, with some of the most popular mysteries out there.
From a technical perspective, the writing is simple and of above-average quality, the pace is fast and consistent, and nothing feels out of place. Every event has a proper build-up to it and chances are you won’t find yourself raising your eyebrows in disbelief very often.
As far as the story goes, while it is indeed interesting to see what is going on, to tell the truth, I found it to be somewhat predictable, and you will too if you have read as many mystery books as I have.
Nevertheless, the plot twists were quite tasteful and kept me going along for the ride, not to mention that the characters themselves, or most of them at least, are quite pleasant.
All in all, I have to say that Daddy’s Gone A Hunting is a solid mystery murder thriller that scores high on every front, apart perhaps from originality where it falters a bit. I enjoyed it a lot, and murder mystery fans surely will as well.
